Michael Slater or Slats is the current opener (number 1 or 2) for the
Australian test team, the New South Wales Blues and Derbyshire (last year).
He was dropped from the test squad after the one-off test against India
in 1996 for poor shot selection. In 1998, he regained the spot replacing
Matthew Elliot (VIC) for the three test Indian tour where he scored career-best
score of 221 (Touring Match: Australia v Karachi). His most famous gesture
is the kiss on the Australia coat-of-arms on his helmet after scoring a
century.
For me, the most memorable century he had scored must be the one in
the 3rd Test of the 1998/99 Ashes Series, it was in Adelaide and Australia
built up a substancial lead in the first innings. Taylor got out for a
single figure and they need to build up a score before Taylor declears
because it was the forth day (don't quote me on that) he score 123 in less
than 100 balls which included (the best shot was the one where he got down
on both knees and smashed a wide out swinger for four runs) his effort
helped Australia to retain the Ashes and later the series.
ODI Debut: Australia v South Africa at Melbourne, World Series, 1993/94.
Latest ODI: Australia v England at The Oval, Texaco Trophy, 1997.
